Deborah Coffman, former director of professional development with the Arkansas Department of Education, is the department’s new chief of staff effective June 17.

She replaces Phyllis Stewart, who is leaving to become communications director for the Arkansas School Boards Association.

Coffman also has served as ADE’s literacy program manager, as an instructional facilitator for the Pocahontas school system, as a literacy specialist at the Northeast Education Service Cooperative, and as an elementary teacher at Hoxie Public Schools.

She also has worked as an adjunct professor, a GED instructor and a private school educator.
