After 30 years of working in a factory, doing “anything that needed to be done,” Geneva Nanson was ready for her own business.

When the factory closed and moved to Taiwan, Nanson found herself wondering what to do next. A couple of years later, she opened the doors to Uptown Downtown Dress Shop, her first business.

Offering brands similar to those carried by department stores such as Dillard’s and J.C. Penny’s, the new business was designed to appeal to people who enjoy shopping in smaller individual shops rather than bigger, more generic stores, Nanson said. Downtown Rogers seemed like the perfect spot for her dress shop.

“If they want something that won’t fall apart or shrink, they come down here,” Nanson said. Wholesalers in Dallas supply Nanson’s goods.

Uptown Downtown Dress Shop carries clothes to fit a considerable variety of sizes. Casual and dressy clothes in petite to plus sizes hang on the stores racks, but the stock also includes soaps, bath gels, candles and lotions.

Nanson and her daughter work in the 1,200-SF shop together, and she said the initial response has been good.
