When Lori Top left her job as an architect intern to have her daughter Isabelle, she wasn’t sure what her next step should be. Isabelle decided for her by refusing to be left at a babysitters without screaming all day long. After two weeks of Isabelle’s protests, Top quit her job and decided to open a specialty shop— Paper & Ink.

Rubber-stampers of Northwest Arkansas now have a new haven to enjoy. Paper & Ink opened in June to offer rubber stamps, stationery, specialty papers and scrapbook supplies to craft lovers in the region.

Rubber stamp brands, Magenta, Judikins, and DeNami can all be found within the 1,100-SF Paper & Ink. Top said her store is the first in Northwest Arkansas to specialize in rubber stamps, and customers drive from Little Rock and Fort Smith to check out the selection.

Start-up costs ran close to $40,000, but they could have been much more significant, she said. Rather than open the doors with every inch of shelving covered, Top opted to bring in merchandise slowly.

Originally, Top had settled for creating custom invitations for herself and her friends. However, she could only find the special art paper used to make the cards in Kansas City, Mo. She always figured that there must be others driving that far for paper too.

Top now operates the store with Isabelle by her side. Services from Paper & Ink should begin to expand soon, Top said, because she wants to offer scrapbook and paper-making classes. Custom invitations will also soon become available.
