“Lyell Thompson of Fayetteville, who has served on the Washington County Quorum Court since 1981, says he’s thinking about running for a state House of Representatives seat that’s been monopolized for 42 years.

Thompson is eying the seat being vacated next year by Charles Stewart, a Democrat from Fayetteville who will be forced to retire because of term limits. Stewart, the senior member of the Arkansas General Assembly, has held the seat since 1955.

Thompson, 73, a professor emeritus of agronomy at the University of Arkansas, says he hopes to make a decision by fall. If he runs, it’ll be as a Democrat.

“I’m keeping my options open,” he says.
