Trish Kalbas-Schmidt of Fayetteville was named the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center’s 2011 State Star.

She earned the recognition by being an exemplary performer, showing a strong commitment to Arkansas small business and contributing significantly to the Arkansas SBTDC program, state director Janet M. Roderick said in a news release.

Kalbas-Schmidt, who’s been with the center since 2008, was honored Sept. 6 at the national Association of Small Business Development Centers’ annual conference in San Diego, Calif.

“I’m definitely very excited and honored and very humbled,” she said of receiving the award. “I love my job, and it’s an amazing thing I get to do.”

The ASBTDC helps entrepreneurs and small businesses through a statewide network of seven offices. The Fayetteville office, based at the University of Arkansas’ Sam M. Walton College of Business, serves eight counties in Northwest Arkansas.

Currently the center is working on designing and offering more classes that will be valuable to entrepreneurship in Northwest Arkansas, Kalbas-Schmidt said. These include marketing, WordPress, human resources, project management and strategic planning.

“We’re just trying to offer a bigger variety for small businesses to be able to optimize on what we have,” she said.
