Community Commitment Unveiled

A new plan unveiled by CommunityCare Foundation Inc. in Springdale for distributing its grant money omitted one impressive commitment. An annual gift of $500,000 has been permanently earmarked for that city’s Jones Center for Families.

That money is separate from a new four-part initiative funding program (see story, p. 9). Helping the area’s immigrant community learn the English language is a big part of the new plan. We’re told English as a Second Language (ESL) programs will get “a good share of” the $3.6 million to be awarded in 2004.

Education initiatives including literacy programs in schools will get about $2 million. Another estimated $250,000 will go to immigration initiatives, including literacy and job-training programs for adult immigrants.
