Newspaper Jumps the Gun in Headline

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette jumped the gun a bit when it announced in a headline on its lead sports page Sunday, Dec. 3: “Hogs booked ahead to Oahu.”

The headline was in reference to the Oahu Bowl game, where the D-G apparently felt strongly enough about Arkansas’ chances of going there that it even mentioned who Arkansas’ possible opponents would be in the game.

We wondered if anyone jumped the gun and made reservations for a Hawaii trip prior to Arkansas officially receiving a bid to the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 4.

Frances Mayo, owner of Around the World Travel in Springdale, said her office had several inquiries about trips to possible Razorback bowl sites.

“Everyone called last week inquiring about both Hawaii and Las Vegas, but no one called about Houston [where the Galleryfurniture.com Bowl is played],” laughed Mayo.

On the other hand, The Morning News sports section had nothing about the UA football team whatsoever in its Sunday edition on Dec. 3.
