We found basic, good food on our recent lunch venture to Micki’s Cafe in Fayetteville. No bells and whistles of basil or imported olive oils sound in the diner. Instead, sturdy home-style dishes make up the menu.

An order of fried mushrooms with a side of ranch dressing ($3) began our meal. The diners all agreed that the appetizer ranked high among other fried mushrooms that we’ve enjoyed, because these were crispy and hot —not soggy.

For the main course, one diner ordered the Grilled Chicken Salad ($6). Generous portions of tasty chicken topped a bowl of crunchy green lettuces, cucumber bits and sliced tomatoes with honey dijon mustard served on the side.

The diner said the salad was fresh and light.

Another member of the party sampled the Chicken Club Croissant sandwich ($5).

“Good and very filling,” the sandwich had a large portion of chicken with bacon, lettuce and tomato. It was simple, with no frills to get in the way of the taste. The diner also ordered a side of french fries over the regular potato chips, and she deemed them as “standard.”

Several other dishes sounded good enough for a return trip, including the Chicken Parmesan sandwich, ($4.59). Micki’s also offers a daily special ($5), which was chopped steak with two side vegetables during our visit.

Overall, Micki’s Cafe offered quick, attentive service in a clean atmosphere. It seemed like a good place to remember the basics in tasty food.
