It?s Official: Clinton Wins

Several shoppers at the IGA supermarket at the corner of College Avenue and Lafayette Street in Fayetteville were confused on Nov. 20 when they saw the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s yellow newspaper box outside the store.

The headline of the newspaper in the window read: “Clinton wins.” The newspaper was dated Nov. 4, 1992, the day after Bill Clinton was first elected president.

We couldn’t help paying the 50 cents to see if there was a stack of the old newspapers in the box, but there was only one, and it was just the front section. The rest of the papers were dated Nov. 20, 2000.

“If it was [in the rack window], somebody put it in there as a gag,” said Paul Smith, vice president and general manager of the D-G. “We sure didn’t put it in there.”

Smith said the 1992 newspaper is a collector’s item, and the D-G had a second run of the paper back in ’92 because of demand.

We wonder if shoppers thought Clinton had been given another term by default since the vote counting was continuing in Florida.
