Store On The Move

Furniture on Consignment has been advertising that it’s closing its Springdale store. But the company has not said publicly why it’s leaving.

We hear it’s because Furniture on Consignment doesn’t want to be liable for the major repairs needed in its 30,000-SF building at 5148 N. Thompson Ave. The company, which plans to be out of Springdale by Sept. 1, apparently had to spend $12,000 of its own money in 1997 and 1998 to repair air conditioning problems as per its lease with the building’s owner, Benny McClain of Muskogee, Okla.

For now, Furniture on Consignment is content to maintain its two Fort Smith locations and its new store on U.S. Highway 62 in Farmington. But there’s a good possibility it will look to reopen further north in the future.
