Shot At The ‘Title’

It’s been reported that Northwest Arkansas Community College in Rogers has financial backers interested in starting a men’s baseball program. But what was not explained was that the reason a women’s softball program is being considered as well is because of Title IX. The college would have to equalize the number of athletic scholarships it will offer to both genders.

We hear, however, there is a movement to get a women’s basketball program instead of softball. Neither have been completely agreed upon yet.

Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but we’d be very interested to see how the daily newspapers would fit coverage of small college sports into their already cramped sports sections. None of the dailies in Benton or Washington County regularly covers Westark College’s baseball team in Fort Smith.

But given the focus on local sports, brought on by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s edition that’s zoned for Northwest Arkansas, NWACC’s teams stand to receive better play.
