Lover?s Lane, Canterbury Remain Among Area?s Nicest Neighborhoods

Arkansas Highway 265 was still a dirt road in 1968 when bankers Ellis Burgin, Hayden McIlroy and others decided to head to east Fayetteville to develop an upscale subdivision.

Thirty-five years later, the Lovers Lane and Canterbury Road area is still considered one of Fayetteville’s most prestigious neighborhoods. The names that grace the addresses up and down Sherwood Forest Estates and the adjoining Hyland Park phase II and Fred Starr Estates make it something of a map to the stars for Fayetteville.

At the very end of the road is the home to the first family — Frank and Barbara Broyles — of Razorback land. UA Athletic Director and former football Coach Frank Broyles has enjoyed the peace and quiet at his Canterbury cul-de-sac for 23 years.

At the very beginning of the trek up Lovers Lane you can find one of Broyles’ former star quarterbacks — Fayetteville businessman and former NFL player Scott Bull. And from Dec. 31, 1976, to June 8, 1984, another head Hog — former UA coach Lou Holtz — made the winding drive home each day to Canterbury Road, stopping a couple of blocks shy of Broyles’ home.

Broyles was in his 11th season as head coach at the UA in 1968, leading the Razorbacks to a co-Southwest Conference championship and a 10-1 record overall. Duddy Waller was guiding the Hog basketball team to back-to-back 10-14 seasons. George Cole was athletic director. Broyles was still five years away from taking over that role.

McIlroy remembers he and several of his friends going in on the land with expectations of later building there themselves.

“With the lots we had leftover, we tried to sell for $5,000 and could not sell a lot,” McIlroy said. “Then Jim Lindsey comes in and puts in Hyland Park and priced his lots for about $10,000-$12,000 each and they sold like hot cakes. We raised our prices to about $10,000 and sold ’em in a matter of days.”

The short stretch of pavement that is Boston Mountain View is home to Doyle Z. Williams, Dean of the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the UA.

In 1968 politics, Don Trumbo was the mayor of Fayetteville and Arkansas Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller was beginning his second of three terms. Nationally, Richard Nixon won the presidential election, while Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were each assassinated.

Other events of 1968 included The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band winning the Grammy Award as the Album of the Year, 60 Minutes began airing on CBS, and the motion picture rating system debuted with G, PG, R and X.

The Northwest Arkansas Business Journal annually profiles an upscale neighborhood, but this year’s grouping includes a trio of roads that make up a portion or all of three subdivisions.

McIlroy and the late Burgin were owners of Sherwood Forest Estates through the LLC Whickerbill Inc. Jim Lindsey founded Hyland Park phase II and Joe Fred Starr was founder of Fred Starr Estates. Here is a look at some of the homes there:
