Wan Shou, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Arkansas, recently received a five-year, $550,000 Early Career Award from the National Science Foundation to develop high-resolution, selective laser printing with inorganic nanoparticles such as metals.

Shou’s project aims to shrink metal 3D printing to the nanoscale, allowing for high-performance electronics and tiny robotic systems. Such robots could deliver drugs directly to cancer cells. Flying robots, no bigger than a bee, could conduct surveillance. Computer chips could include internal cooling channels to reduce energy use by data centers.

“We hope to enable emerging microelectronic and microrobotic applications with the proposed affordable manufacturing technologies,” he said.

Shou believes he can lower the costs of microscale 3D metal printers from hundreds of thousands of dollars to no more than the average cost of a car.

Shou joined the Mechanical Engineering Department in 2021 after completing postdoctoral training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned a doctorate in mechanical engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology.
