Abel Dupris Lawrence, age 78, passed away on May 18, 2026, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was born on March 6, 1948, in San Antonio, Texas, to the late Thomas Phillip Lawrence and Marie (Morgan) McAlpin.

Abel shared 55 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Sandra Louise (Crossno) Lawrence. Together, they built a life centered around love, loyalty, and family. He also dedicated 55 years of service to Mercy Hospital, formerly known as St. Edward Mercy Medical Center, in Fort Smith. Throughout his long career, Abel faithfully served in many roles and spent more than 15 years working in the surgery department, where he built lasting friendships and earned the respect of countless physicians and coworkers. His dependable nature and strong work ethic were unmatched — he was always on time, rarely missed a day of work, and took great pride in serving others. During his years at the hospital, one of the doctors even taught him how to play chess, a memory he always cherished.

Outside of work, Abel had a passion for racecars and enjoyed watching NASCAR whenever he could. He also loved caring for his rosebushes and spending quiet time at home with Sandra. Abel had a generous heart and was always willing to help others. He faithfully donated to the Salvation Army and, alongside Sandra, brought joy to children during the holidays by volunteering as Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Though Abel and Sandra did not have children of their own, they deeply loved their nieces and nephews. Abel especially treasured the close bond he shared with them, including teaching his nephew how to drive. He was a devoted family man who lovingly cared for his mother for many years while she lived nearby.

Abel will be remembered as a loyal husband, a dedicated employee, and a man who quietly showed his love through faithfulness, service, and kindness. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Abel is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra Lawrence; his one and only sister, whom he thought the world of, Mary Ford and husband J.L. Ford; his brother, Larry Lawrence and wife Naomi of Houston, Texas; his brother-in-law, Sammy Crossno and wife Pat; his sisters-in-law, Loretta Guthrie and husband David, and Darlene Lawrence; along with a host of extended family members, dear friends, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas Phillip Lawrence, John Ellis Lawrence, and Timothy Joseph Lawrence.

Cremation is under the thoughtful direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
