Arkansas Gov. Sarah Sanders on Friday (April 5) called for a special convention to fill the vacancy for the GOP nomination in the House District 66 race.

Nick Priest, the Republican nominee, dropped out of the race last month citing health concerns.

According to state law, Sanders outlined plans for a county convention to select Priest’s replacement. Her proclamation declares:

A special convention of delegates of the appropriate county shall be held no later than Friday, April 19, 2024, for the purpose of filling the vacancy in nomination for the Republican Party nominee for the office of the Arkansas House of Representatives, District 66.

The period for filing for candidacy as a party candidate with the Secretary of State for the special convention shall commence at 12:00 noon on Monday, April 8, 2024. The deadline for filing as a party candidate shall be 12:00 noon on Wednesday, April 28, 2024.

Upon approval of a convention by the appropriate County Party Committee for the nominee of the Republican Party of Arkansas a certificate of nomination shall be provided to the Arkansas Secretary of State and to the Pulaski County Election Commission no later than April 28, 2024.

The Republican replacement for Priest will face Democratic incumbent Rep. Mark Perry, D-Jacksonville, in the November election.
