Arkansas Humanities Council seeks Black history and culture grant proposals

The Arkansas Humanities Council, an Arkansas non-profit affiliate of the National Endowment for Humanities, is seeking proposals for Black History and Culture grants before the upcoming August 15 deadline.

These grants enable Arkansans to preserve, collect and document Black history within the state. The Black History and Culture Grant is offered as part of the Arkansas Humanities Council’s mission to promote the appreciation and understanding of the humanities in Arkansas.

“Unfortunately, African American history and culture has been historically underdocumented,” Arkansas Humanities Council Executive Director Jama Best said. “It is absolutely vital that we work to rectify this, as knowing and having access to this history increases our understanding and connection to one another within the state.”

The Black History and Culture grant provides funding for non-profit organizations who wish to research, document, preserve and interpret Arkansas’ African American history and culture. Eligible projects include oral histories, cataloging, documenting, archiving and digitizing Arkansas’ African American historical collections, research and documentation of funeral home records and obituaries, research and programming on topics such as, but not limited to, Civil Rights, The Great Migration, and African American history, community history, humanities-based workshops, and/or similar projects.

The Arkansas Humanities Council awards grants through a competitive process to non-profit groups and organizations that allow them to plan and conduct projects in the humanities for Arkansas audiences, in addition to teachers and schools for professional development credits and engaging learning opportunities outside of the classroom.

The Council offers a wide range of grants, including major and mini-grants for humanities projects; grants for teachers, classroom projects, and field trips; and funding for making the humanities accessible, as well as Black history and museum collections grants.
