Arkansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Tom Kimbrell announced the selection of three low-performing schools eligible to receive over the next three years up to approximately $11 million in federal School Improvement Grant (SIG) funds.

The grants, awarded to schools through a competitive application process, must be used to implement one of the four school improvement models required by the federal government. All three of these schools will incorporate the transformational model which calls for replacing the principal and improving the school through comprehensive curriculum reform, professional development, extended learning time and other strategies.

The gra

nt recipients and funding amounts are:

  • Little Rock McClellan High School – $4,302,960
  • Hughes High School – $1,788,850
  • Forrest City High School – $4,916,575

“We are grateful for the federal resources which will greatly improve the ability of these schools to develop a strategy for improvement that fits their unique circumstances,” said Kimbrell. “The state is serious about the use of SIG funds to improve academic performance, and will monitor the implementation to ensure they are bringing about real change for students.”

To date, Arkansas has received $51.8 million since the SIG program was redesigned in 2009.
