Zweig Signs Deal to Build in Summit Place

Mark Zweig, working under the Mark Zweig Inc. umbrella, has built a reputation by restoring homes in Fayetteville’s historic district and near Wilson Park and other downtown areas.

Now he’s moving north to build houses from the ground up, in the Summit Place subdivision. Zweig said he has reached an exclusive construction agreement with developers of the stalled subdivision just east of College Avenue, near Township Street.

“There’s no way I can create the kind of atmosphere I need to sell my houses at the price I need to sell them if other builders are building the usual stuff,” Zweig said.

The hillside development originally was intended to hold about 60 homes, but recently was re-platted so that it will accommodate 127. Zweig said the homes will be reminiscent of his previous work, with all-wood exteriors, cedar-shingle siding, and wood doors and windows.

Additionally, they’ll feature engineered foundations and Arkansas-native stone fireplaces and retaining walls mixed with modern amenities like centralized stereo systems and energy efficiency appliances. Each home also will have a basement, many of which can function as a storm shelter.

Zweig said the development will be done in five or six phases, with phase one including 27 homes based on eight varieties. He said an additional 20 varieties will be used to fill the remaining space.

The initial phase will feature homes ranging in size between 1,300 and 2,200 SF, and priced at about $200 per SF. A playground and multiple commons areas will be added to the neighborhood as construction progresses.

“We’re excited to get going,” said Zweig, who hopes to break ground on the first homes this month. “We really believe we’re offering some that been previously unavailable in Fayetteville.”
