Library hosts ‘Kids in the Kitchen’

About 60 people, children and their family members, kept the elves busy at Dewey’s Cafe for the first 45 minutes of Kids in the Kitchen on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 17) at the Fort Smith Public Library.
Baristas Darby White and Aubrye Branscum, dressed as elves, scurried from table to table refilling bowls of candy and snacks, delivering sugar cookies and providing to-go boxes for aforementioned but now decorated cookies — all while tending to other patrons seeking coffee.
The two-hour long event saw its greatest rush in the beginning before the crowd dwindled.
Children made reindeer chow from a combination of pretzels, marshmallows, M&M’S, white chocolate chips and Chex Cereal mixed to their specifications with green colored sugar sprinkles.
Sugar cookies were also provided for this no-charge event and children decorated them with a choice of several colors of gel icing in tubes and then adorned them with reindeer chow components.
This is the third Kids in the Kitchen event held since late summer said barista Darby White. The library usually holds the event around the time of a major holiday but that is not a requirement.
White said during a previous Kids in the Kitchen program, which occurred in summertime, the creation was ants on a log — celery, peanut butter and raisins.
"It’s usually something that we find online from kids recipes or something that’s very easy to do, that you can do at home and enjoy without making a huge mess," White said.
