The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith has hired Jeff Harmon as director of marketing and communications. He will begin in the job Oct. 18.

Harmon will direct the efforts of the Marketing and Communications Office, which includes a staff of 11 graphic artists and designers, editors, photographers, student assistants and interns. He reports to Dr. Arleene Breaux, vice chancellor for university relations.

Harmon served for four years in a similar position with Arizona State University, where he managed all aspects of Arizona State’s online and extended campus marketing team and was responsible for the development and implementation of the institution’s strategic marketing plan.

Harmon was previously director of marketing for the University of Illinois System and its online programs for three years, managing online marketing across three campuses, a position he left when recruited by Arizona State.

His background also includes positions as vice president for marketing and sales for DynaPortal Software Inc., where he was responsible for the development and implementation of the core marketing and sales strategy for DynaPortal.

Harmon has a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a master’s degree in business administration from Arizona State University.
