Van Buren up, Fort Smith down on June building permit values

The city of Fort Smith issued 334 building permits in June for work totaling $11.89 million, down more than 49% from the busy May 2008 activity resulting from hail and wind storm damage.

Of the June total, 36 permits were for commercial construction — new, remodel, repair and additions — totaling $6.92 million, and 243 permits were for residential work valued at $3.79 million. Of the residential total, the city issued 23 permits for new home construction with a total value of $2.32 million.

The commercial construction includes a $2 million permit for a new U.S. Social Security office at 6801 Dallas St. — between South 66th Street and South 70th Street in east Fort Smith.

The June value also was 37.5% down from May totals. Fort Smith issued 285 total permits in May that were valued at $19.04 million.

VAN BUREN
The city of Van Buren issued 53 permits with a total value of $1.6 million, up more than 10% in value over the 48 permits issued in May. Of that, 36 were for single family residential work valued at $1.4 million. There were no commercial permits issued in June.

The city in April issued 45 permits valued at $1.5 million.
