On the east side of the runway at Carter Field in Rogers, Carl and Lois Kinney opened Midwest Aero Inc., an airplane maintenance, inspection and repair shop.
Federal Aviation Administration-certified mechanic Tom Leverich works with the husband-and-wife team. With a basic license, Leverich can service almost any machine that lands at the airport, Lois Kinney said.
When the Kinneys moved to Northwest Arkansas from Dallas, Carl Kinney still needed to travel each week between Rogers and Houston to consult for Exxon Mobile. He uses the couple’s Baron twin-engine plane to travel.
During the week, Lois Kinney uses the Baron’s hangar for Midwest Aero Inc.
Opening the airplane repair shop proved to be expensive, Lois Kinney said. Including the cost of the airplane hangar and an inventory of tools, the business initially cost about $250,000. Each new plane needing service will require new tools, though.
