The Business Lunch – Boardwalk Cafe

rrWe checked our doctor’s dieting orders at the door when we chose the Boardwalk Cafe for our lunch outing, but it was well worth the rebellion.

rHidden down a hallway in the UARK Bowl building on Dickson Street in Fayetteville, the tiny restaurant churns out helpings of food fashioned before cholesterol warnings became common.

rCasual business lunches fit into the atmosphere of the cafe, because almost everything in the dining room can spark a conversation. For instance, the owners’ daughter Molly painted each piece of artwork on the walls.

rLone lunchers can enjoy a meal with one of the hundreds of available magazines.

rOne of our diners, already a Boardwalk hamburger fan, summed up the trip best when she said, “It wasn’t anything fancy. It was just really good.”

rOn this trip, the author of our catch phrase ordered the Mega Nachos ($4). Heaped with chips, cheese, beef, refried beans, onions, sour cream, lettuce, tomato and jalapeno peppers, the meal more than satisfied her appetite. Heat sensitive diners should know that peppers come standard on each nacho order.

rTwo members of our party ordered the Ole Fashion Burger with cheddar cheese ($3.15 naked, $3.50 with cheese), and this brought the only mixed review.

rOne diner, the biggest eater in the office, gave his burger four stars. Each burger is about half a pound of ground beef dressed with mustard, pickles, red onion, lettuce and tomato.

rEntertained by the unique atmosphere, this diner added, “The place was fun.”

rOur second burger tester sounded unimpressed when he said the meal was “average.”

rAlso on the downside of our visit, the beverages were served in very small cups. Even the large sodas appeared in 12 ounce servings, and refills cost a quarter each. Iced tea came in the same small portions, but refills of tea are free.

rThe final member in our party ordered a massive Burrito Supreme ($3) that was stuffed to overflowing with refried beans, chili, cheese, salsa, sour cream, lettuce and tomato. She said the delicious burrito was almost more than she could eat at lunch.

rWe agreed it’s the kind of place everyone should experience at least once.
