Public Company Report – American Freightways
Harrison-based American Freightways Corp. has implemented bar code scanners with embedded digital cameras to further enhance its less-than-truckload (LTL) service.
rThis technology allows pictures to be taken of shipments during the loading and unloading process and has been successfully field-tested at AF’s customer center in Kansas City in preparation for widespread distribution throughout the company.
rAF’s goal behind the new technology is to ensure accuracy, decrease expense and compress cycle times. It was developed through AF’s information technology staff using company-developed software.
rThe hand-held device will scan each shipment as well as snap digital photographs of the condition of the freight as it is loaded and unloaded.
rAF is a scheduled, for-hire carrier of less-than-truckload shipments of general commodities. It currently serves 40 states, and through partnerships serves Alaska, Canada, Caribbean Islands, Central America, Hawaii, Mexico, Puerto Rico and South America. It employs 17,000 associates operating over 28,000 pieces of revenue equipment from a network of 263 customer centers.
