UAFS Student Housing Wins LEED Certification
The Lion’s Den student housing building on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith has received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Allison Architecture of Fayetteville designed the 446-bed building that opened in August 2010. Flintco Inc. was the contractor for the project.
Mark Horn, vice chancellor for university relations, said in a news release, “This globally recognized LEED green building certification system is third-party verification of our policy. It verifies our pursuit of energy-efficiency advantages, use of recycled materials, indoor air quality, regionally sourced materials and drought-resistant landscaping.”
Lee Krehbiel, vice chancellor for student affairs, said the Lion’s Den takes the concept of stewardship out of the classroom into everyday life.
“We have some pretty sophisticated heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems in these buildings,” he said in the release. “And that makes for a very enjoyable place to live.”
