With long-time Sebastian County Clerk Doris Tate seeking the Arkansas Secretary of State position, the election for the county post will be without an incumbent for the first time in almost 20 years.

Into that void comes Angie Hatwig who has been Tate’s chief deputy for the past 10 years. Hatwig formally announced Thursday (Jan. 14) her entry into the race as a Democrat.

The following is Hatwig’s statement.

Angie Hatwig announces her candidacy for Sebastian County Clerk. She will be a candidate in the May 18, 2010 Democratic Primary. Hatwig, 42, has 21 years experience in the County Clerk’s Office. She has been chief deputy for 10 years under current County Clerk, Doris Tate. Tate has announced her retirement to run for Secretary of State.

As chief deputy she supervises office staff in the Fort Smith and Greenwood offices. She has been very involved in the election process including the implementation of new election laws, working with schools and cites on elections. She has completed two redistricting cycles. Hatwig assists in the preparation of the budget, acts as secretary to the Quorum Court and Equalization Board, preparing minutes.

“The County Clerk serves as a historian of records. My goal is the continuation of automation of records. This will include the ability to search our records online.”

Hatwig is a resident of Fort Smith. She is married to Steven Hatwig. They have one son, Alex. Hatwig is a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church.
