Goshen Hires Building Inspector

For the first time in its history, the city of Goshen has hired a building inspector, James Royal. The Goshen City Council approved the hire in February. Royal, a Goshen resident, has had his own residential building inspection business for a year.

“It’s code inspection so you have to get different certification and license for it,” Royal said. Royal will wear many hats for Goshen, acting as the entire building department, performing building code inspections as well as administrative duties.

“We wanted to get a little better quality control over what is being built,” Goshen Mayor Andy Bethel said. “And have more accountability as to what is being built and how it is being built.”

Royal gets paid on a fee-payment schedule. He receives $30 per permit issued and $30 per inspection. In addition, he receives 20 percent of building permit fees that are above $460.
