J.B. Speed, chairman of USA Truck, has announced he will retire from his position at the Van Buren-based company at the quarterly board meeting Oct. 18.

Robert M. Powell, president and CEO of USA Truck, will also assume the duties of chairman until the board of directors elect a new one.

Speed was one of the original members of the group that acquired the USA Truck in December 1988 and has served as chairman since then. Previously, Speed had been employed for 21 years with Arkansas Best Freight Corp. and his private investment company, Transco Inc.
