Following are news brief items from the Fort Smith metro.
Airport Parking System
The Fort Smith Regional Airport and parking system operator Republic Parking are implementing a new parking system. The new system, installed in January, seeks to simplify entry and exit while maintaining on-site assistance for customers who need help.
Upon entering the parking lot, drivers will press a button at the entry machine to receive a parking ticket. Once the ticket is issued, the gate will automatically open to allow entry, according to an airport press release.
When exiting, parkers will proceed to one of two automated exit lanes. Drivers will scan the barcode on their parking ticket, and the total parking fee will be clearly displayed on the screen. Payment is processed directly at the exit machine, after which the gate will open. Customers will also be prompted to request a printed receipt before completing their transaction.
While the new system does not include a traditional cashier booth, a parking lot attendant will be on duty to assist customers, answer questions, and help ensure a smooth experience.
To avoid scanning issues at exit, signage will be placed at the entry machines reminding customers not to leave their parking tickets displayed in vehicle windows. Prolonged sun exposure can fade the barcode, making it more difficult to scan during exit.
“This new parking system is all about improving ease of use and efficiency for our passengers,” said Airport Director Andrew Meyer. “By modernizing our parking operations and maintaining on-site assistance, we’re creating a more streamlined and user-friendly experience from arrival to departure.”

‘Roar and Explore’
Nearly 600 accepted students and their families visited the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith on Feb. 13 for Roar and Explore, an annual, invitation-only event designed to help new students prepare for enrollment.
A total of 273 future students and 323 guests were registered to attend the full-day, on-campus experience, which is recommended for all admitted students.
The event began at 9 a.m. at the Stubblefield Center, where students and families checked in before attending a welcome session address by UAFS Chancellor Terisa Riley. Her address was followed by an overview from admissions and financial aid outlining next steps in the enrollment process, including financial aid, advising, and required admissions tasks.
Students attended the Majors Expo at the Recreation and Wellness Center where they met with faculty and staff to learn more about academic programs before participating in a 45-minute mock class led by UAFS faculty. While students attended mock classes, parents and guests participated in a Family Support Track session focused on supporting students through the transition to college and understanding what to expect during the first year.
Campus and housing tours were offered, including visits to the Recreation and Wellness Center and Lion’s Den dining hall.
