Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (ARCOM) in Fort Smith will be one of the eight institutions nationwide to serve as a testing site for the Core Competency Capstone for Doctors of Osteopathy (C3DO) Phase 2 Pilot Program.

The program was developed by the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners to replace the physical examination component of COMLEX, said ARCOM Dean Dr. Shannon Jimenez, in a Friday (Jan. 12) press release from the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education.

“The primary objective of the C3DO is to establish a robust and standardized assessment that can be administered locally at colleges of osteopathic medicine. This examination aims to evaluate students’ competency in fundamental osteopathic clinical skills, aligning with a national standard,” Jimenez said.

ARCOM’s acceptance into this program comes with a $40,000 grant earmarked to support various activities related to the successful execution of the program. The funds may be used to subsidize or hire essential staff.

“The pivotal role played by the Center for Clinical Skills Development at ARCOM cannot be overstated. Through collaborative efforts with faculty and the (National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners), the center will transform the C3DO from a mere examination into a comprehensive evaluation, equipping our students with the essential skills needed for their future medical careers,” Jimenez said. “Serving as a testing site for (the pilot program) elevates ARCOM’s national standing within the osteopathic medical community. This recognition is expected to attract high-caliber students and faculty, further contributing to the institution’s growth and success.”

Participation in the C3DO capstone testing process will not only provide valuable insights into the evolving landscape of osteopathic medical education but also allow ARCOM to enhance its curriculum, an ACHE news release said.

Collaboration with the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners also will open doors for partnerships with other medical institutions and organizations, according to the news release, which could lead to joint research initiatives and collaborative projects that enrich the educational experience at ARCOM.
