A shareholder and board member of Grand Savings Bank died in an airplane crash at Bentonville Municipal Airport on Wednesday.

Rex Grimsley of Bentonville was a founding board member of the bank, starting April 1, 2013, said Guy Cable, the bank’s chief executive officer. Grimsley was 70.

“He was just a phenomenal supporter of Grand Savings Bank,” Cable said. “We’re definitely going to miss him.”

At 9:36 a.m. Wednesday, Bentonville police and fire departments responded to the airport and found that a 1983 Beechcraft Bonanza had crashed into a hangar at 2410 S.W. Aviation Drive, according to a news release from Bentonville Police Department. Grimsley, the pilot, was the only one onboard the airplane.

The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the cause of the crash, the news release shows.

Along with his work at the bank, Grimsley raised cattle and invested in real estate throughout the area.

Cable said he was blessed to have the opportunity to work with Grimsley over the years.

“He’s kind of an icon in the Northwest Arkansas area,” Cable said.
