Long wins Jonesboro council runoff race

In unofficial numbers, Bobby Long defeated Dr. Richard Wang by a 1,483 to 1,278 margin, or 54%-46% for the Ward 6, Position 1 seat on the Jonesboro City Council.

Long, who works as the human resources director for Cavenaugh Auto Group, said the first run for public office was a humbling experience.

“When I first started, I had no idea what I had gotten into,” Long said.

Long said he spent nearly two months talking to voters about different issues. As for issues, Long said he wants to work on flooding concerns as well as police salaries.

The early and absentee votes were returned about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (June 7). In those numbers, Long had 843 votes, or 55%, while Wang had 689, or 45%.

Long and Wang, a political science professor at Arkansas State University, were the top two finishers in a May 10 special election. On May 10, Wang picked up 2,112 votes, or 32%, followed by Long with 1,798 votes, or 27%. Three other candidates picked up the remaining votes.

As for the vote Tuesday, it will be certified officially June 17.
