On Wednesday, Lukas Deem with RetroCat Media will be the guest speaker at Little Rock’s 1 Million Cups.

The programming starts at 9 a.m. at the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce. It’s easy to participate: just show up, drink coffee, ask questions and network for an hour.

Talk Business & Politics caught up with Deem to talk about RetroCat Media’s start and growth.

TB&P: What services does RetroCat Media provide and where did you come up with the name for the company?

Lukas Deem: RetroCat Media provides creative video services for businesses, startups, and individuals. We produce anything from corporate events, music videos, to social media content. The name RetroCat came from a fusion of my love of cats and my friends’ interest in the 80’s retro style. It was catchy, and unique so it stuck.

TB&P: What’s your long-term vision for the company? Do you want to make movies or TV/online programming, do private client projects, evolve into a pure digital content provider or something else?

Deem: Ideally, the business will expand to encompass the word “media” in all senses. I have already begun expanding into producing web content by recently launching HARK. Moving forward, I would like to see RetroCat producing music videos, but also producing several shows on a regular basis covering a variety of topics. I’m really excited to see how virtual reality will change the media industry and can’t wait to take an active part in that as well.

TB&P: What’s been your biggest challenge as an entrepreneur?

Deem: I think my biggest challenge as an entrepreneur is figuring out how to balance life and entrepreneurship. Typically you think of entrepreneurs as sleepless, overworked, and frantic. This year, I have been putting more focus on my own health and development. As the CEO of the company, I form the foundation of the business. How can I expect to build a successful startup if I myself am not sound? Owning a business is a constant roller coaster ride, you must find some level of zen in the chaos of it all.
