Neurosurgeons Bring Talent, Families to Northwest Arkansas

The addition of neurosurgeons Mahan Ghiassi and Mayshan Ghiassi to the staff of Washington Regional Medical Center gives the hospital the ability to treat acute stroke victims in Northwest Arkansas, rather than sending them to Oklahoma City or Little Rock.

The Ghiassi brothers are specialists in the field of endovascular neurosurgery, which employs catheter technology to operate within the blood vessel. The new method bypasses the more invasive open brain surgery.

Educated and trained at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, the Ghiassi brothers are among the few who practice endovascular neurosurgery, an emerging field. They are also trained in complex spinal procedures.

Washington Regional now has a hybrid operating room that houses a rotating table that can accommodate both endovascular and open neurological cases.

“Without the hybrid room, what we do is impossible,” Mahan Ghiassi said.

A big reason why the brothers came to Washington Regional is because the hospital had openings for two neurosurgeons, which allowed the brothers to stay together. They also brought their wives, their children and their parents with them to Fayetteville.

“We wanted to keep the family together,” Mahan Ghiassi said.
