Silent films, War Eagle and Duck Dynasty invade NWA

Crafters, Duck Dynasty fans and Halloween enthusiasts will have plenty to do during the last half of October.

War Eagle

October equals War Eagle in the Ozarks. Thousands from across the region will descend upon Northwest Arkansas for the annual War Eagle Fall Arts and Craft Show (Oct. 17-20.)

The event is comprised of three arts and craft shows scattered throughout the mill grounds. Vendors will be set up in the War Eagle Mill parking lot and across the bridge at the War Eagle Fair Show. The Sharp Show will take place in the fields adjacent to the mill.

Hundreds of professional craftsmen, artists and other tradesmen will be on-site selling unique items. Food concessions offering everything from light snacks and beverages to full meals will also be open.
 
Breakfast will start at 6:30 a.m., with booths opening at 8 a.m. each day. Booths will remain open until 5:30 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, and will close at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

A Night at the Speakeasy
Shhhhh…a speakeasy has made its way to town and the Junior Auxiliary of Rogers-Bentonville is inviting everyone to get in on the action. The organization will present “A Night at the Speakeasy” wine opener and silent auction on Oct. 18 from 7 p.m. to midnight.

In true speakeasy fashion, the venue is top secret. Guests will not learn of the event’s location until they have purchased a ticket and entered the secret code online, upon which the address will be revealed.

Drinks, heavy hors d'oeuvres, and dessert by P.F. Chang’s will be served. Live music will be provided by the Wes Hart Band. Tickets are $60 and can be purchased by contacting Julie Springer at 479-586-8156.

The Big Draw

Families can celebrate the great art of drawing at Crystal Bridges’ “The Big Draw” event on Oct. 20. Sponsored by the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, the event welcomes family members of all ages.

The Family Sunday event will include “drawing with words” by St. Louis street poet Henry Goldkamp and a special draw along with music by “Farmer and the Markets” on Walker Landing.

Artist Jeff Hopkins of Brooklyn will make Pictures Come to Life, giving storytelling and drawing performances, and bringing special characters from the museum’s collection to life for participants. Guests will be treated to hot dogs and are invited to take part in a number of outdoor activities, including a fall hayride.

Activities will be held in the Crystal Bridges’ Great Hall from 12 to 5 p.m, unless otherwise noted. Crystal Bridges is located at 600 Museum Way in Bentonville. The event is free and no registration is required. For more information, visit the museum’s website.

Field of Ducks

Duck Dynasty is comin’ to town. On Oct. 20, members of the Robertson crew, will appear at Arvest Ballpark to share about their lives, the show, and the lessons they’ve learned in building their family business.

Stars Willie, Korie, Miss Kay and Uncle Si from A&E’s most-watched show will take the stage at 6 p.m. Prior to the Duck Dynasty cast’s appearance, there will be live music on the stage, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Gates open at 3 p.m.

Vendors will also be set-up around the ballpark, as well as a kids’ area featuring face painting and inflatable bounce-arounds.

Power of the Purse
The Women’s Foundation of Arkansas will hold its 2nd annual Power of the Purse Northwest Arkansas luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 21, 2013, at Embassy Suites in Rogers.

Martha Moore, owner and president of Fort Smith-based McCormick Asphalt Paving and Excavation will be honored as WFA's Woman Business Leader of the Year.

The keynote speaker is Holly Gordon, the executive director and executive producer of the 10×10: Educate Girls, Change the World project.

Rogers by the Reel
It will be step back in time on Oct. 25 as The Rogers Museum Foundation celebrates the city’s historic past with its annual gala, “Rogers by the Reel.” This year’s event will portray the city through film, showing movies made in Rogers from the 1910s through the 1960s.

Guests will be treaded to drinks and dinner, while enjoying a number of silent films. One of the feature presentations will be a 1912 film entitled, In and Around Rogers. The movie depicts moving images of local residents going about their daily lives. Home movies from the 1940s, 50s and 60s will also be shown showcasing parades, rodeos from that day, as well as construction of the Beaver Dam.

Dinner will also include the showing of a classic Rogers’ film, America’s Heartland, which was produced in 1954 as a way to showcase all the city had to offer. KNWA’s Channing Barker will serve as the evening’s emcee.

The gala will take place at the Rogers Little Theater from 6 to 9 p.m. Attendees are invited to dress in the attire of their favorite decade.

All proceeds benefit the Rogers Museum Foundation. Tickets are $75 for Friends of the RHM and $100 for non-members. They may be purchased online or in-person at the museum.

Habitat for Humanity Benefit Concert
Habitat for Humanity of Washington County will present its fourth annual benefit concert, “An Evening with Jonathan and Kara Story,” on Oct. 25.

The concert will be held at the Fayetteville Town Center beginning with a VIP reception at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will follow at 7 p.m. and the concert will begin at 8 p.m. A live and silent auction will also be included in the festivities.

Tickets for the dinner and concert are $50. Cost to attend the VIP reception, dinner and concert are $75. Corporate tables are also available for purchase. Halloween in the Hollow

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art will celebrate “the ghoulish glories of the season” with “Halloween in the Hollow” on Oct. 25. The museum’s ArtinFusion group, consisting of members ages 21-40, and their guests will come in costume for an evening of food, drink and music.

Admission will include a haunted gallery tour, as well as delicious food and drink prepared by the culinary staff of Crystal Bridges’ Eleven restaurant team. Randall Shreve and the Sideshow will perform. Guests will also compete for prizes in a costume contest.

The party will be held in the museum’s Great Hall from 8 to 11 p.m.

Following the event, guests can make their way to the after-party at 21c Museum Hotel. Green Cabs will be on stand by to transport guests to the event.

Tickets are $25 and include two drink tickets. They may be purchased online or at the Guest Services counter in the museum.
