Wal-Mart joins the ranks of other retailers to announce it will make flu vaccine shots available in hundreds of its stores beginning this week.

The retailer has partnered with Summit Health to make flu immunizations and up to 10 other vaccines available to the public.

An e-mail sent to consumers on Saturday (Sept. 28) detailed the retailer’s immunization plan for this year.

The retailer has set up a website that allows consumers to find the nearest store offering the vaccines which are administered by the pharmacist or a Summit Health nurse working inside Wal-Mart.

The “seasonal flu season” in the United States can begin as early as October and last as late as May.

The cost for the flu vaccine ranges from $25 to $28 for those paying cash, according to a Wal-Mart spokesman.

Summit Health also accepts several forms of insurance including:
• Aetna
• UHC
• Humana
• Medicare-B
• Blue Cross Blue Shield, Premera
• Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arkansas (Consumers need to contact Summit Health at (248) 864-4147 for details.)
