UA lands top 10 in royalty revenue

For the first time in school history, the University of Arkansas has finished in the Collegiate Licensing Company’s (CLC) top-10 selling institutions based on royalties generated from officially licensed products.

The Razorbacks moved up four spots from last year, finishing 10th among CLC schools, marking the first time Arkansas has cracked the top 10 since partnering with the affiliate of IMG College in 1988.

From July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013, the University of Arkansas licensing program generated $4,047,327 in gross royalties from licensed merchandise. This total represented a seven-percent increase ($273,188) from last year and marked the first time in school history gross royalties exceeded $4 million. Revenues generated from the institution’s licensing program provide support for the University of Arkansas’ women’s sport programs.

“The tremendous loyalty and passion of Razorback fans combined with the strategic expansion of our licensing program has placed the University of Arkansas among the nation’s elite institutions in the sales of officially licensed products,” Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long said in a statement. “We appreciate the efforts of our licensing team, our partners at CLC, all of our licensees and vendors and of course the Razorback fans that helped the University of Arkansas set new sales records. By purchasing officially licensed products, our fans are not only showing their Razorback pride, they are helping provide support for the continued success of our program and Razorback student-athletes.”

The retail marketplace for college licensed merchandise in 2012 was estimated at $4.62 billion. Royalties generated from the sale of officially licensed collegiate products go back to the institutions to support various student and campus endeavors, therefore it is important for consumers to ensure the merchandise they purchase is officially licensed.

Top apparel categories for 2012-13 included T-shirts, women’s apparel, fleece, and headwear. Top non-apparel categories included video games, housewares, domestics, and sports equipment.
