Paul Gatling has been named editor of the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal, effective May 17.

Gatling, 37, has been an assistant editor at the Business Journal since February 2011. He previously spent nine years — 2001-2009 — as sports editor at the Benton County Daily Record in Bentonville.

Gatling also will oversee editorial content and production of Gray Matters LLC’s annual special publications such as Northwest Arkansas Guest Guide and Northwest Arkansas Newcomers Guide. Gray Matters is the parent company of the Business Journal.

Gray Matters president and CEO Darin Gray said Wednesday he expects “a seamless transition” as Gatling assumes the role currently held by Rob Keys.

“Paul has years of experience as a writer and a manager of strong editorial teams,” Gray said. “Paul was an obvious choice, as our executive readership has been loyal readers and followers of his work.”

Gatling was raised in Bald Knob and graduated from Bryant High School in 1993. He earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Henderson State University in 1998.

Gatling said he is energized about beginning this new chapter in his life and career.

“I am humbled and thankful that Darin has given me this opportunity, and I’m excited to tackle the challenge,” he said. “We hope to continue to provide the Northwest Arkansas business community with the excellent coverage the Business Journal has been known for.”

Keys has worked at the Business Journal since 2009, and served as editor since February 2011. He recently accepted a position in a related field at Arvest Bank.

“Rob Keys has been an invaluable asset to Gray Matters and the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal,” Gray said. “He has played such an important role in making the Business Journal what it is today.

“Rob will always be considered not only an important part of our company, but forever a member of the Gray Matters family.”
