Teens can travel back to Frontier Fort Smith Saturday, March 16, from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. at the Quarterly Student Member event at the historic Clayton House. For a $5 annual membership fee, junior- and senior-high students get the quarterly opportunity to earn volunteer certificates, enjoy a Victorian tea, try their hand at 19th century sports, and experience a special living history program.
The volunteer activity will consist of tilling the Clayton House flower beds. The history program, entitled “Good Horses, Better Boots and Gold Coins: Stories Behind the 10,000 Clayton Cases,” will feature re-enactments by the teens of certain infamous bandits prosecuted by U.S. Attorney William Clayton in Judge Isaac C. Parker’s court.
Students are asked to call the Clayton House at 783-3000 or email [email protected] to sign up for the event. The Clayton House, at 514 North 6th Street in Fort Smith’s Belle Grove Historic District, is the authentically restored circa 1882 family home of William and Florence Clayton, who raised their family there from 1882 to 1897. The historic house museum serves as a living history book of Fort Smith’s Victorian era on the frontier, complete with spacious parlors and antique furniture of the period.
