Tyson Foods Gets ‘A’ on Sustainability Report

Tyson Foods Inc.’s latest sustainability report is its first to receive a grade of A from the Global Reporting Initiative, which pioneered the development of the world’s most widely used sustainability reporting framework.
The grade means the Springdale-based meat processor’s 2012 report met the highest level of transparency and disclosure recognized by the GRI.
“For us, sustainability is about trying to do the right thing in everything we do,” Tyson president and CEO Donnie Smith said in a news release Tuesday. “It’s fundamental to our core values, cuts across every aspect of our business, and supports our mission of making great food and making a difference.”
The 2012 report is the fourth the company has produced since 2005, the news release stated.
Companies submit reports at the A, B or C level, indicating the extent to which the GRI’s guidelines of sustainability reporting were applied.
According to the GRI website, application levels “do not give an opinion on the sustainability performance of the reporting organization, the quality of the report, or on formal compliance with the … guidelines.”
Tyson’s report outlined its accomplishments in the areas of animal well-being, water and fuel conservation, nutrition, hunger and disaster relief, and charitable giving.
