FCRA grants easement to Old Dominion

The Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority (FCRA) has granted an easement to Old Dominion Freight Lines for property associated with the company’s trucking terminal estimated to begin construction at Chaffee Crossing in August.
FCRA Executive Director Ivy Owen told The City Wire on Thursday (June 28) that the facility will result in the “transfer of 25 existing positions” to Chaffee Crossing, but that it would not result in new jobs at this time. The company now operates out of a warehouse on Vicksburg Street near the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Zero Street in Fort Smith.
Old Dominion purchased 10 acres for $300,000 from the FCRA in January 2012 with the original intent of closing in 90 days or less, but a drainage ditch on the first piece of property caused the company to request relocation of the purchased area in May, delaying the closing date of the transaction, Owen said.
The trucking terminal facility will be used “for the loading and unloading of products to businesses,” Owen told FCRA board members in January.
“We’re ready to go, and they’re ready to go,” Owen said on Thursday, adding that construction time is “one of those ASAP things. The builder is in town and ready to start, and we’re hoping to close by the tenth of July,” Owen said.
