It’s been about 10 months since we told you the Brandon Burlsworth Foundation had begun work on expanding its “Eyes of a Champion” program throughout Southeastern Conference territory.

Now we’re telling you final approval was granted during the first week of January. Expansion in all nine SEC states is expected to begin Feb. 1.

The foundation was set up to honor the memory and legacy of the former University of Arkansas football great, and the program provides free eye exams and eyeglasses to low-income, uninsured children.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has been a supporter all along the way, and the program received another boost from an October benefit dinner honoring former Congressman John Paul Hammerschmidt. The dinner was the BBF’s first such event and raised $435,000, much of which will go toward the “Eyes of a Champion” expansion.
