The first Pink on the Links was held Friday, June 19, at Hardscrabble Country Club as part of the Fort Smith Classic, a tournament on the PGA Nationwide Tour.

Pink on the Links was a day dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer and to support the Ozark Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure as they work to save lives and end breast cancer forever by educating people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.

Martha Pendleton, chair for the Pink on the Links, thanked everyone who volunteered and helped.

“This is a big event inside of a big event, but we are hoping this will become one that is nationwide,” she said.

The Pink Zone, open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Hardscrabble Tennis Facility (aka 19th Hole), featured four areas for women to enjoy, learn from, and interact with.

The Health Area, sponsored by St. Edward Mercy Health System, included breast health information from local healthcare providers. The Beauty Area housed professionals providing manicures, massages, and make-overs.

The Sports Area, sponsored by Academy Sports, showcased a selection of women’s sports gear, several local women’s sports teams/opportunities, a virtual driving range, and a Wii fit.

The Fun Area, sponsored by Best Buy, featured electronics for participants to interact with as well as give-aways.

The Pink Zone, along with the fashion show, was “Barbie-inspired.” Because 2009 marks Barbie’s 50th birthday, the fashion show highlighted what Barbie thinks about now that she is middle aged. Barbie (Tiffany Willard) was on-hand for photos with girls of all ages.

Talking before the fashion show, Pendleton said she overheard some golfers remark about all the pink saying, “It looks like Barbie threw-up in there,” and she considered that a compliment.

The Fashion Show was co-hosted by KNWA Anchor Neilie Jones and St. Edward Mercy CEO Jeff Johnston. Clothing and accessories from several local boutiques were featured and local breast cancer survivors served as the models.

Lunch, provided by Poultry Direct, was available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and included a chicken breast, several sides and strawberry shortcake.

Golfers and caddies decked out in pink for a prize and the designation of “Prettiest Pro in Pink.”

The day concluded with Par-Tee Pink in the 19th hole. The Bouffants, known for their big hair, big voices, and even bigger attitudes, helped participants celebrate a great day of golf, education and fun for the cause.
