UA’s White Names Long Athletic Director
University of Arkansas Chancellor John White has announced Jeff Long as the university’s new athletic director.
White named Long as the new AD during a news conference at the Broyles Athletic Center. Long said he would arrive at the UA sometime in mid- to late-October.
The university said Long will receive a base salary of $450,000, with “additional incentives for athletic and academic achievements.”
Long, now the University of Pittsburgh’s athletic director, said he would not try to replace out-going athletic director Frank Broyles, who he called an “icon.” Long said Broyles told him that he has his full support. Long said Broyles’ support would be “vital” moving forward.
Among the reasons Long listed for coming to the UA were the friendly people, the athletic facility and the support of Razorback fans for their program. He also praised White’s role in leading the university.
“I believe the University of Arkansas is moving in the right direction academically and athletically,” Long said.
Long said that as a leader, feedback will be important.
“I want feedback. I want my staff to share their thoughts and ideas. I’ll listen. I’m not a top-down leader,” he said. “I don’t believe I have all the answers.”
