We weren’t surprised to see that the Krispy Kreme store in Bentonville had sales of $1.4 million in 2005 after all the hoopla surrounding its June 2004 opening. But when we stopped to think about it, that’s a lot of doughnuts.

That’s about 2.3 million doughnuts sold in a year, based on a price of about 60 cents each.

With the most current population estimates for Benton and Washington counties provided by the Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission, that’s whopping 6.2 doughnuts eaten per person, or $3.71 cents spent. The yellow pages lists at least 15 other doughnut shops in the two-county area.

Krispy Kreme’s corporate Web site said it produces 2.7 billion doughnuts annually through 322 stores worldwide.

Krispy Kreme reported in December that it expected sales of be about $130 million for fiscal 2006’s third quarter, which ended Oct. 30, 2005.
