Wal-Mart Gets Prettier at Opening Time
Mickey Gilley, the country music singer whose 1970’s nightclub in Pasadena, Texas, (outside Houston) kicked up an “urban cowboy” craze, opened Gilley’s Dallas on Oct. 2. During an interview aired Oct. 16 by National Public Radio on Fayetteville station KUAF, 91.3-FM, Gilley said the new club would be nicer than its legendary predecessor.r
The singer described the state of dilapidation the nightclub had fallen into before it burned in 1989 by comparing it to a couple of discount chains.r
“We were running a Kmart or Wal-Mart operation at 7-11 prices,” Gilley said.r
We’ve visited both big-box retailers in metropolitan markets where we were shocked to see dirty floors and what appeared to be helter-skelter displays. About the only time we’ve seen Wal-Mart Stores Inc. facilities in the shadow of their home office seem untidy is during the wee-morning restocking hours, but then it’s back to spic and span by dawn.r
Maybe Gilley owes the retailer a new rendition of his hit, “All the Girls Get Prettier at Closing Time.”r
