Sparks Recognized for Quality Improvement
The Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care recently honored Sparks Health System in Fort Smith with an Innovator Award for “its commitment to excellence in health care and its innovation in quality improvement,” according to a press release issued this month by the AFMC.
The award was also based on Sparks’ work in increasing beta-blocker use in heart patients. Ninety-one percent of heart attack patients discharged from Sparks are receiving beta-blockers, up from 53 percent last year, according to Dr. George Liesmann, senior vice president for medical affairs at Sparks. Beta-blockers are credited with reducing complications and mortality in people with heart disease.
