Morning News Underplays the Exceptional
On Dec. 5, after an ice storm hit the area, The Morning News published two photos on Page 1 of its Fayetteville edition: one of a man scraping ice from his windshield and one of students walking to class at the University of Arkansas. It was the usual stuff.
On Page 2 of that same issue, however, was a dramatic photo by Eugene Williams of four Bentonville firefighters carrying an injured Fayetteville man from his upside-down pickup truck that had slid off Interstate 540 in the ice.
It was one of the best news photos we’ve ever seen in The Morning News and should have been the lead art on Page 1. We realize The Morning News is doing this four-city zoning thing, but the injured man was from Fayetteville, even though the accident occurred in Bentonville. We think that’s enough to justify running a great photo on Page 1.
