George?s to Have New Old Face

Ben Harrison and employees of George’s Majestic Lounge were busy the week of Sept. 9 tearing off the facade that has covered the front of the building since at least the early 1970s.

What’s left behind, Harrison said, is George’s the way it looked as far back as its early days in the 1920s. Instead of a red stucco front made of concrete and chicken wire, the front of George’s is now primarily windows.

Harrison said he hopes to have the work completed by the time the Arkansas Razorbacks play Alabama on Sept. 28.

Harrison said he plans to keep the retro front for at least a year. After that, he may consider sets of glass doors that open to give the bar a sidewalk cafe atmosphere.

Harrison owns 30 percent of George’s, which is the oldest tavern in Fayetteville. His parents, Bill and Betty Harrison, own the remaining 70 percent.
