Bur Edson, who has been an anchor with KFSM, Channel 5, for more than 20 years, is retiring to operate a business called Alpha Metal Manufacturing in Lavaca with Mark Verkamp.

“We are going to make metal buildings, metal roofs, architectural panels, that sort of thing,” Edson said.

Edson is scheduled to retire from the television station on Sept. 6, his 55th birthday. KFSM is based in Fort Smith and also has a Fayetteville newsroom.

Edson said he and Verkamp started the new business about three months ago. Verkamp previously owned Omega Construction Co., which manufactured most of the metal rooftops on banks in downtown Fort Smith.

The new venture will broaden the scope of Omega and will require a plant that is three times the size of the existing Omega building in Lavaca, Edson said.

“We are just about finished building the plant,” he said.

Edson said he will return occasionally to do special projects for KFSM.
